Microcurrent Therapy

Microcurrent is especially effective for highly acute and acute stages or phase 1 of an injury, where pain and edema reduction without the precipitation of muscle spasms is desired result or goal. Muscle spasm in many cases of severe pain can aggravate the patient's complaint. Microcurrent not only stimulates the production of endorphins and enkephalins but reduces edema even on a cellular level. Microcurrent has been demonstrated to be very effective in treating subacute and chronic conditions where the desired result is relief of radiating pain (eg. sciatica). Another advantage of microcurrent is the body's inability to accommodate to it as compared to other EMS Therapies, thus expanding the therapeutic treatment time. Pain control is via the "Gate Control Theory". Pain reactions occur in an alkaline area. Positive polarity is subsequently used and applied directly over the pain site. Microcurrent is also very effective in treating trigger point pain. Trigger point pain is produced in an acidic area. Negative polarity is subsequently used and applied directly over the pain site. Microcurrent will be performed for symptom relief of the acute, subacute and chronic pain associated with CTS. The pads will initially be placed distal and proximal to the sites of pain. The initial settings will be at a frequency of 80 Hz just below patient perception for 20 minutes. This will be followed by a variation of the dermatome technique. The pads will again be placed distal and proximal to the involved area. The settings will be at 0.3 Hz just below patient perception for 10 minutes.
